Im in the middle of building it. when im finished im going to have a wooden arch over the top, about 7 foot high, if that makes sense.
will that make herons think twice? I dont want netting as I think it doesnt look very nice
We get them where I live along with the equally destructive egrets. I’ve seen all kinds of things tried to scare them away or prevent them from coming at all and I thin if they want in, they’ll get in. I agree with the poster who mentioned the steep and deep sides and I would add plenty of hiding place like floating plants (water lillys) or artificial floating thing so the fish can hide from the birds.
You will sooner or later. They are up at the crack of dawn and will raid you pond for easy pickings. If you don’t like the idea of a net over, try a low green plastic hooped wire fence about 30 cms. high or a couple of strands of wire round the perimeter. Herons like to land on terra firma and wade into the shallows and then fish. You may like to try a plastic heron in the shallows. Herons fish alone.
Actually the best deterrent I’ve found is to make the walls of the pond steep. So steep that herons can’t stand in the water to hunt your fish. Also, keeping the edges of the pond free of tall vegetation will also deny hiding places for the herons to use.
If you have to, you can string some monofilament fishing line about 3 or 4 feet off the ground. Good luck.
depending on where you live, there may be a chance you will get them. if you have seen them around your neighborhood, then there is a good chance, if not, who knows. the arch may make it slightly harder for them to land directly next to the pond, but ultimately they will just walk over to it.
yh u will but put a stip of wire around the pond about a few centimetres high and it will trip and fall in the pond it wuill give them a fright so they wont come bak
yes youll get them! they are devils! one ate all my dads koi carp! the only thing that might deter them is a large fake stork or other large bird…doesnt look good but its better than netting…good luck!!!
they r sosso fish i dont think you’ll need a net
I don’t think you will
