If you’re looking for that finishing touch to just round off your home or even something which you could add to your house in order to increase its value, then wood shutters are the way to go.

Also known as plantation shutters, these kinds of shutters can add a touch of elegance to your home. Their classic styling is what makes them so popular, combined with the fact that they can be stained or painted to your needs.

Wood shutters can also create a kind of theme for the house. They are good at bringing all of the windows together and giving a uniform style. At the same time it is their sheer versatility and the way that they can fit in with modern and old fashioned decors that makes them the window shutters of choice.

Moving away from the looks aspect for a moment, it’s important to realise how much insulation wooden shutters can give. They are superb at keeping in the warmth. Likewise if you need shutters that are able to vary the amount of light you let in then wooden shutters are great regulators here too.

Wood shutters are warm and authentic but their closest rival is the vinyl shutter. These types of shutters are generally cheaper than wood and that is what is making them almost as popular as our old friend the good ol’ wooden shutter.

You get what you pay for however, and wooden shutters are the real deal! With vinyl, you can usually only get them in white or a variant thereof – and naturally staining is not an option. Also, if you have an irregular shaped window such as an arch then you just can’t get vinyl shutters that will do the job. Let’s not forget how customisable wooden shutters are.

Lastly, the majority of vinyl shutters can be rather cheaply made so you should always aim for quality and that’s where wood shutter come in.

They are extremely easy to clean – just wipe a damp cloth across them. But if you’d prefer you can just give them a lick of paint every few months to keep them looking good as new.

The majority of wood shutters are made of cedar wood – in itself strong and durable, though it may be wise to invest in some wood protection kits if you choose this option.

Overall then, wooden shutters look classy, keep you warm, regulate light more easily than other shutters and while they may be more pricey than their rivals – their customisation and look will do wonders for the value of your home.

Window shutters add a nice touch to a home’s exterior. In other parts of the world, especially Europe and the Caribbean, shutters serve a functional purpose. They cover windows by night or in bad weather to keep out bad weather or cold air. By day they are pushed open from the inside and secured in place to let daylight and the sun’s warmth into a home. This is especially important in communities where the majority of residents lack central heating or air conditioning.

But in many industrialized nations, housing includes shutters more as accent pieces or adornments than as functional window covers. Shutters may cover the home’s largest windows, the windows on the front side of the house, the windows on the sides as well as the front, or every window in the home.

Shutters typically coordinate with a home’s design to bring out a certain style in its appearance. For example, you can get shutters that are rectangular-shaped, or those that come in other forms. Here are some things to consider when selecting shutters for your home.

1. Does the home’s exterior paint or paneling come with matching shutters? If so, consider using these to match the existing design, even if you had the siding done first and now want to add shutters. If not, check with the home supply provider for suggestions about the type of shutters that will go well with your current outdoor siding. You may be able to look at a print or online catalog, or view samples at the store. Some stores provide references of previous customers who have purchased these shutters, and you may be able to talk with them about their level of satisfaction or drive by their homes to have a look.

2. Choose a coordinating design and color. If your home’s siding or finish does not come with matching shutters, check out several possible options before selecting one for your home. Popular styles are made of aluminum and vinyl, along with other materials that are weather-resistant, so find out what’s available, along with the merits of each.

3. Compare styles to find one that suits your home’s design and structure. Some shutters come with two matching panels, while others have four. You can get louvers, but keep in mind these can collect dust and may be difficult to clean. Even when operational shutters are not needed, some people choose to install them for special effect on their homes.

4. Find out all you can about the product’s quality. Ask the sales associate about each product’s durability and lifetime expectancy. Also ask about how to clean various shutter types, and what type of special cleaning substances will be needed, if any. You might also want to know about any particular conditions that afflict certain products. Wood shutters, for instance, may tend to get dry rot, termites, or other wood-associated conditions. Any type of shutter might attract insect nests, and aluminum shutters may be prone to rusting.

Take your time in asking questions like these to find out what you need to know before buying shutters for your home.

An exterior rolling shutter is not limited to acting as a sound barrier, sunblock, and security sentry. As an alternative to exterior wood shutters, these tough window treatments are designed to provide maximum home improvement value, combined with aesthetic attraction. Manufactured from either aluminum, or PVC, the rolling shutter offers a unique way to add practical curb appeal to your beloved family home.

Investing in rolling shutter protection for your property increases energy efficiency, by limiting heat loss to a large extent. This money-saver also enables you to utilize your air-conditioning more effectively. During the hot months, roller shutters help to keep the heat where it belongs - outside.

Some aluminum rolling shutters are robust enough to qualify for hurricane certification, thus offering reassuring storm protection. Another advantage of rolling shutter installation, is the superb light and glare control it features. Traffic rumblings, and other disturbances are kept at a distance, thanks to the noise blocking effect of a quality exterior rolling shutter.

The insulation and noise-numbing characteristics of the rolling shutter, is the result of the double-walled aluminum outer layers, combined with a polyurethane foam filling. Some manufacturers use PVC, with a honeycomb inner structure, which has similar qualities. These materials contribute to the exterior roller shutter’s reputation for corrosion-resistant durability.

The hood of the rolling shutter gives a neat finish, and hides the slats when not in use. When closed, the shutter locks into position, and is sturdy enough to deter would-be intruders. With a weather-resistant finish, your colorful rolling shutter will retain its smooth, bright appearance for many years.

Rolling shutter operation allows for a choice between manual pull-strap, or crank action, and the convenience of multi-function motorized control. The roller shutter hood accommodates the roller tube that houses the motor.

Various usage options are available, including a wall switch for interior operation of the roller shutter, a key switch for outside operation, or a remote control that opens and closes the shutter at the touch of a button. A master control can also be installed for operation of all the window shutters from one central point. This can be managed individually, or as a group.

As with a retractable awning, modern technology allows for the inclusion of a sensor, that is activated by the sun or wind. A timer option leaves you free to set your preferences for a number of days in advance.

One of the few drawbacks of this type of window cover is that rolling shutters are not easily available in special shapes, suitable for arched or angled windows. With exterior wooden shutters, this won’t be a concern.

Compatibility to the architecture of your home, your interior design, and aspects such as the patio furniture and design, should all be taken into account when you make a decision about a rolling shutter installation.

You know those wooden shutters on your home; the ones that you never close that hang off the sides of your windows? Well, they are out. Traditional shutters are something that has been around since the birth of the United States and require a great deal of maintenance including the oiling of the unused hinges and the painting and staining of the wood. The truth is that it is time for them to go.

You don’t have to get rid of the look completely, just get rid of the old wooden version. There are modern choices that make much more sense in terms of practicality as well as appearance. For instance, aluminum shutters do not close (no hinges to oil or clean) and are resistant to a variety of weather conditions. This means that you can use them no matter where you make your home and that you will not have to oil parts you aren’t using. Any time exterior maintenance time can be cut, your life gets easier.

There are a number of other shutter types around that you may want to consider over wood as well.

For one, vinyl offers a number of attractive pros. It is inexpensive to buy shutters of vinyl and they can last as long as 40 years. In other words, through the life of your mortgage, you can go without replacing shutters. It is certainly something worth thinking about. They can be bought in most any style, and they can be painted easily.

Another alternative to your wooden shutters are composite shutters. Made of MDF or particle board, they are made to resist both weather and rot. If you want to be able to shut your shutters, then this may be the way to go as some are available that may be opened and closed. However, don’t forget your hinge maintenance if you go this route.

As with just about anything nowadays, there is always fiberglass. Fiberglass is great if you live in an area with severe weather as shutters made of it can be used for window protection in hurricanes and storms. However, it is expensive and does not last as long as the vinyl shutters do.

Then there is, of course, the aforementioned choice of aluminum shutters. These alternatives to the traditional wood offer protection and strength while not being quite as expensive as their fiberglass cousins. They look great and are strong, but there is a drawback to the purchase of aluminum shutters; most companies offer little more than three or four years of warranty protection. This is because they are prone to denting and chipping.

The next time you decide to do a little home improvement, consider replacing those old shutters. The admiring looks you get from your neighbors will be your reward.

If you’re looking to give your home an updated look, on the inside or the out, make sure you look at shutters. Whether you need exterior wood or vinyl, or if you’re looking for interior window shutters, they are a very easy, and usually affordable way to give your home added interest and elegance.

Interior window models have become the decoration of choice for most homeowners and interior designers. When it comes to covering wide expanses of windows in home nothing works as well as interior wood shutters. They allow you to control the amount of light coming into your home. Floor to ceiling windows can be covered with 3 or 4 louver sections that move independently. This means that bottom louvers can be closed to allow for privacy, and upper louvers can be opened to allow for light. You can’t do this with vertical blinds.

If you’re looking to update the outside of your home think of exterior wood shutters or exterior vinyl. Actually, today’s faux wood products are so very realistic there isn’t any reason to buy real wood. Composite exteriors are made of virtually indestructible poly vinyl that will never need care. This product won’t fade or chip, crack or peel. Poly vinyl holds up to moisture.

There are many different types of decorative and operable shutters available on the market. The most common are Board and Batten, Raised Panel and Louver. You can also find variations on these themes. There are a lot of companies that offer custom designs so that you can mix and match different styles.

Of course you can purchase operable shutters if you wish. You just need to measure very carefully so that the shutters will meet in the center of the window. Bermuda shutters are very popular at homes on the shore as they simply drop down and cover the entire window.

When you purchase make sure that you have the necessary hanging hardware. You may also want to check into decorative hardware and accessories depending on whether using exterior or interior products.

Any homeowner who wants to add to the curb appeal of their home, or who wants the perfect window treatment for the inside of their home should check out shutter styles.

Interior window shutters have been used for hundreds of years to create privacy, light control, and a sense of elegance for any room. While other window treatments can offer some of the same benefits, they just don’t have the same stream-lined style and elegance that interior shutters have. You can find window shutters made of wood, faux wood, and other materials.

Typically, an interior window shutter can be installed within a window frame or on hanging strips next to the window. Hanging strips are simply strips of wood around ¾ inches by ¾ inches that are mounted on the wall and painted to match the window trim. Installing an interior window shutter is easier if you use hanging strips because windows are often not square and it can be time consuming to get the shutter to fit inside the frame.

Before you begin, you need to determine if the shutters should be painted to match your décor. Some shutters come unfinished or you may wish to make them a different color. If you need to change the shutters from their purchase condition, the time to do so is before you hang them. Prime and paint them or finish them with a wood stain. Louvered shutters can be difficult to paint so you may want to use spray paint in order to get into the corners.

To install your interior window shutters to hanging strips, first hang the window strips to the sides of the window frame. By using a hanging strip, your shutters will be level and plumb even if your window is not.

Next, use hinge mounts to hinge the shutter panels together. In some cases, these mounts will be included with the shutters). Use a spacer before permanent attachment to make sure that the window shutters will be able to open and close.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to attach hinges to the shutters and position them in the windows. You will want to check that they are level and that there is a consistent space around them. Brace the shutters in the position you want them in and mark the hinge locations on the hinge strip. Drill holes for the hinges on the strip and attach the shutters to the hinge strip.

While many people hire professionals to hang interior window shutters, you can do this task if you follow the instructions and take care. Hanging shutters inside the window frame can be more difficult, and if you choose this route, you may want to consider having someone more experienced hang them. If you are using hanging strips on the outside of the window, however, you can do it yourself.

Interior window shutters aren’t your only option for window treatments. Find other options at http://www.mywindowtreatmentpro.com/ such as Hunter Douglas blinds and other great alternatives.

If you are in need of window shutters for your home you may be amazed and confused by the dazzling array of diverse styles and materials available in the window shutter market today. There are so many new materials being introduced it may make you wonder what is best for your home but rest assured that high quality wood shutters are still the standard for your home’s window shutters. There are a few other things you need to know before you begin shopping as well.

Basically there are two distinct styles of shutters that you really have to choose from. Traditional window shutters have very narrow shutter panels with louvers that are approximately 1-1/4 inches. These window shutters are also normally thicker in the front and more narrow in the rear resulting in a sort of wedge shape. The plantation style shutters are usually a little thicker and have larger louvers.

When it comes to the finish of your shutters you can choose them to be painted, stained or even have both. The majority of window shutter companies carry paint that is available in the same colors as stains so if you prefer paint you can still get a stained look. Stains really enhance the grain and color of wood and come in a diverse variety of tints from very light natural tones that barely stain the wood to darker ones that may be almost black. In any case these stains can only be used on real wood and shutters made of composite wood materials or synthetics cannot be stained.

Due to the variety of shutter materials and sizes the price of shutters will vary greatly and a lot of shutter manufacturers will calculate the price of window shutters on a square foot basis. Most of the time what you will see are prices calculated based upon the number of panels, the window size, finish and shutter style you have chosen.

The actual number of panels shown across the shutter depends upon the style of shutter as well as the width of the window. If you have chosen a traditional style window shutter you will use more panels across the window since these are more narrow than the plantation style shutters.

Individual companies vary in their suggestions for the amount of panels used on each window. For taller windows you may want to go with a two tiered window shutter unit that features two sets of shutters per window with one for the upper portion and one for the lower. This type of shutter unit is also referred to as double tier. What is great about this style of shutters is that each set can be opened separately so you can leave one section closed if you wish.

Do you live in an area that’s typically prone to storms or hurricanes? If you are looking for security storm shutters, there are several types available. The accordion is not in the wooden shutters category but is a very durable shutter that moves horizontally between the lower track and the upper. Interlocking blades that are made of aluminum make up a wall of protection in the shutter. If you have a larger area for it to cover, it can have a center opening with half of the shutter moving to the right and the other to the left. Although this shutter doesn’t fall into one of your most decorative window coverings category, it provides good protection against theft, flying debris, and hurricanes as well as forced entry. It will also give you more privacy and reduce noise.

One type of protective covering that does a good job in protecting from the glare of the sun and heat is the aluminum awning. Affordably priced and very functional, they fit doors, patios, porches and windows well. There are two types available, the standard awning and the winged awning, and both easily close down to convert to storm shutters.

Window coverings such as bahama shutters are more decorative and will provide excellent privacy, weather protection, security and sun control. They also work well in helping to reduce solar-heat buildup over porches, carports, and windows. It protects enclosed terraces, balconies and patios as well. Another excellent shutter is the colonial hinged shutter. It can withstand hurricane force winds, and when it is installed beside the window, it will swing closed and can be locked to deter vandalism and unauthorized entry. The roll shutter comes from the wooden shutters family and is energy efficient. It rolls up and down over the opening and offers great protection from hurricanes or burglar attempts. It is also great for noise reduction and makes a wonderful exterior window treatment. Whether you purchase wood shutters, aluminum or some other type of product, they can offer you a good hedge of protection from storms, theft and flying debris.

Most people want wooden shutters because they look great on or in a house. The best kind of wood for interior wooden shutters is basswood. There are many reasons why basswood is the most popular and here are just a few:

1) Basswood is strong but it is also light
2) Basswood has a grain that is uniform allowing a beautiful stain finish
3) It is easy to glue and to finish
4) Basswood trees are growing faster than they are being harvested
5) Basswood does not warp

Item #5 is probably the most important reason why basswood is the overwhelming choice for wooden shutters. Basswood does not warp and that makes this kind of shutter great for being next to windows where they will be exposed to sun, cooler temperatures, and some moisture. Wooden shutters can be a problem if a wood is used that does not weather the conditions properly. Because warping is such a problem, many people also choose another material such as plastic disguised as wood to be used.

Basswood is easy to work with because it glues well and can be made into the texture you desire by sanding and staining. It also dries rapidly without any distortion. These are all very important to have in a high quality wooden shutter. Basswood it seems is just the most versatile type of wood for the purpose of making shutters.

Basswood is also often used for such things as furniture, wood handles, millwork, musical instruments, and of course interior wood shutters. It is a wood that is useful to make many different things and if you are contemplating getting wooden shutters, basswood should be at the top of your list of woods to consider.
