Creating a nice stained glass window or mirror can be one great and unique project to decorate or beautify your room and mirror making them look more personal. Adding a touch of creativity using your own style can make a difference in your room. Making you own stained glass window is far more practical and affordable than buying one that is done by a professional. The following are the materials and guide for a personalized painted window. You can buy these materials from home improvement and crafts shops.

For the painted stained glass window, you will need these supplies:
Plexiglas Sheet
Pattern of your choice
Leading strips
Crafts knife or cutter
Leading
Your choice of colours for glass paint (Ceramcoat also makes a nice glass paint)
Toothpicks
Glass paint sealer
Double-sided adhesive tape

Guide to making your stained glass window:

The first thing to do is to take the measurements of your window. Cut a Plexiglas that is half an inch smaller than the size of your window for a nice fitting.

Paint on your Plexiglas sheet. Be as creative as possible to make a nice design and shade. Then, attach the sheet to your window to make the impression of a stained glass without having the need to paint directly on your window/glass. By doing this, you can change the Plexiglas sheet whenever you feel like having a new design for your glass.

The Plexiglas is important for you to have a flat surface to work on and the paint will not run down.

It also makes changing easier because sooner or later, you might want a new look for you window. Your personal taste in the future will most probably be different from what you like now.

Make sure to measure your window accurately. Home improvement stores usually cut Plexiglas sheet depending on where you intend to use it. Have it cut about ¼ inch short of the actual measurements of your window for a good fit. This way, you will avoid bending of the Plexiglas sheet.

Choose a good design that compliments the room where you intend to place your personalized stained glass.

Arts and craft stores usually sell kits with ready made designs and patterns including colouring instructions. However, you can also choose your own drawing or design. Enhance it in your computer and enlarge it prior to printing to readily use it as a design for your stained glass.

Simply position the pattern underneath the Plexiglas and secure it in place with adhesive tape so it will not move while you draw and paint. You will see the fruits of your creativity through the Plexiglas.

Carefully put the leading strips along the outlines of your pattern.

The leading strips do not contain any real lead and they are adhesive once you remove its paper at the back. Place the strips in the Plexiglas carefully following the outlines of your pattern placed underneath. Press down on the strips to make sure that they are secured in place. You can cut them at any thickness you want. Once you pulled out a strip, do not attempt to stick it again. Pulling it out affects it ability to adhere on the Plexiglas instead, cut another one and replace what you have pulled out with it. Seal the ends where one strip meets another using a liquid leading. This does not contain real lead as well. Liquid lead is usually available in ready-to-squeeze bottles with a nozzle-like tip which you can cut across using sharp scissors at its end. This can make you become more precise in your application along the ends of the strips.

Apply the liquid leading where one strip meets another to create an impression of soldered joints just like what you can see in a real stained glass. Allow the liquid leading to dry up for 24 hours before you proceed on working with your project.

Once the liquid lead had completely dried up, you can now proceed with painting your design. The lead outlines will serve as your guide to separate each section.

Glass paints are also available in ready-to-squeeze plastic bottles with nozzle tips.

Simply snip the ends of the nozzles and the paint is ready to be applied. There is no need to shake or mix the paint as this can only cause bubbles to develop. Avoid shaking the paint bottle as you paint to avoid froth from developing as this can affect the quality of your project.

Start painting from the center of your design and then work your way out to avoid laying your arm and hand on the painted sections and staining the rest of the design.

Apply the sealer.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions in applying the sealer to protect your window from changes in temperature and fingerprints. Allow your project to dry for 24 hours before installing it.

Carefully hang the Plexiglas sheet in your window/mirror.

Apply your double-sided adhesive tape along the edges of your window. Gently mount your painted Plexiglas sheet following the adhesive tapes. Press the edges. Clean the painted glass window using a damp clothe a week after.

However, if you have a limited budget, plastic exterior shutters are one way to enhance the exterior of your house in an affordable way. Many years ago, people used wood shutters, with the widespread use of plastic furniture and plastic appliances. A plastic shutter had also gained its popularity because it was easier to clean, to maintain, and eventually also cost less.

Below are some advantages of using plastic shutters:

Plastic shutters enhance structures.

Plastic shutters add interest and detail to buildings that have windows and need additional detailing. They can transform simple windows into decorative and beautiful ones, a plastic shutter can help you overcome some major flaws in the exterior look off your home.

Plastic shutters are weather resistant.

Plastic shutters are normally designed to withstand extreme temperate climates and even intense sunlight. They can resist extreme hot and cold temperatures and they do not wear out easily. One of the most significant advantages that the plastic shutter heads over the which other is the fact is that it is light, strong and durable.

Plastic shutters do not rot.

The materials that make up plastic shutters are durable and sturdy. They do not oxidize. Termites can not damage them though they look like wood when seen a few yards away. Saving you fairly expensive treatments, and many other different products that I used in protecting what shutters, the plastic shutter is durable and strong.

Plastic shutters come in different colors.

As mentioned above, plastic shutters may appear as wood but they can be treated with different colors. Manufacturers provide an array of colors and designs. The plastic industry can supply with many different solutions, colors, designs and looks for your exterior plastic shutters, thus making it very simple to create the atmosphere and look that you desire.

Plastic shutters are easy to assemble.

Plastic shutter kits usually have manuals that guide homeowners on the step-by-step procedures of installing plastic shutters. Normally, they can be either bolted or screwed directly to the exterior surface of a house or a building. The whole procedure can take off a few minutes from you.

Plastic shutters are really attractive.

One thing that many homeowners fear is that a plastic shutter, or any plastic material in the exterior of the house, would make the house look a little cheap and, a little out of date. While it is true that what shutters are considered to be classic, the plastic shutter has the ability to look as if it is made of wood, it is much easier to maintain clean, and was probably not need replacing for a very long time. Though plastic shutters are not created to be as functional as wood exterior shutters are, they can have the grainy and natural look of any wood.

They are really attractive and can look as perfect shutters.

shutters can be a great way of upgrading the exterior off your house, using plastic shutters is one off the ways you can add easy to install, easy to maintain and much more important, easy to clean, shutters.
When choosing blinds for your home you need to consider a few basic things. You are going to want the blinds for just one, or a few of the following 4 reasons -

1 - to control the light coming in to the room

2 - to be private

3 - to control heat

4 - to be fashionable

Lets start with perhaps the most versatile of blinds, the Vertical Blind. A vertical blind has louvres that slide out on a headrail to cover the window. Close the louvres and they make a “wall” of fabric. Open them and you can see through the gaps. Put the louvres at an angle and you can stop people seeing in or out from one direction, but still let light in.
They are also the most economical for covering a large area. Many people still think of them as office blinds, but things are changing with a large choice of leather effect, suede, PVC etc.

Next in line, the Venetian blind. This blind goes horizontally across the window. The blind can be up or down, and the slats turned to control the light. With these blinds you can tilt the slats to stop people looking up or down, but still let light in. The main problem perhaps is that they can collect dust. One of the best ways to clean them however, is with a feather duster.

Wooden Venetians are incredibly popular at the moment as they are very natural and give a warm feeling to a room.

Roller blinds are the most basic of blind. They are either up, down or somewhere in the middle. You get little chance to control the light other than blocking in completely. Still very popular as they are quite contemporary with clean lines, they can also come in lots of patterns and colours including some very good blackout options for people who like to be kept in the dark.

Roman blinds are a variation on the roller but are much more luxurious (and therefore expensive). A piece of fabric folds upon itself. Again, you can’t really control the light, but for fashion they are very good.

If you are looking to control the heat you can get most blinds made of a fabric with a special backing to reflect the heat. The most common place to control the heat is a conservatory, and pleated blinds come into there own. These blinds are basically rollers but with a fold every 25mm or so. These are used 95% of the time on conservatory roofs.

I hope this helps.

Often consumers visit their local window coverings store, or their web stores, to select a type of covering for the windows in their home or office. The visit will start with the customer entering the store and approaching the salesperson in the store, “I am looking for window treatments for my home.” Then the salesperson in the store will push what is giving him the highest commission, or what they think is the easiest choice for the customer to make, thus leading to a quick sale.

Sometimes these salespeople will offer only the lowest cost items to get the easiest sale. Other times, they will show the most expensive products, thinking that the customer will not know where else to be educated regarding window treatments. The search for information about the many and various types of blinds starts here in this article, where we will discuss the correct names of several types that one can purchase.

Most blinds are called by the name that describes what they are. Let’s take a little time to learn about these different names. In other articles, we will discuss how to use them, and the benefits of each kind.

Horizontal blinds have slats that are horizontal, or side to side. These come in several varieties, and the names for these are usually based on the material from which they are manufactured. When made from metal, they are usually made from aluminum these days, so these can be called aluminum blinds. (These were traditionally called venetian blinds, and this name is still used in the industry.) Other types of horizontals are made from wood, so these are called wood blinds. There are also fake, or faux wood products used in horizontals, and these are called faux wood blinds. Some people choose basic plastic slat material for their louvers, and this material is correctly called PVC, so these are called PVC horizontal blinds.

Vertical blinds are those that have the material running up and down, or hanging (vertically) from a track. Vertical blinds can be made from fabric- so they get the name fabric vertical blinds. Others made be made from aluminum, and these are called aluminum vertical blinds. Aluminum vertical blinds are not sold often anymore, but they are still out there. Then, there is plastic, again using PVC, to make PVC verticals. Those made from PVC used to be the least expensive type, but recent changes have meant that only entry level PVC verticals are the lowest prices.

Then, one can consider what is a micro or mini blind? These are made from aluminum, and they are smaller than the traditional Venetians. How much smaller you might ask? Well, if Venetians (and wood or faux wood blinds) are 2 inches deep, then the minis are 1 inch deep. Micros are even smaller at half of an inch deep.

The above are the basic types of blinds out there, but there are some specialty styles to consider. These start with skylight, motorized and between the panes. We will discuss these types a little.

Skylight blinds are just what you would think. These are made for skylights. Usually these are small treatments, and often minis, which use specialty control systems. When used in skylights, window treatments need to be controlled differently than regular window coverings.

Motorized blinds can be any of the types of products we already discussed, but are motorized. These motors are getting more affordable, and can have increasing amounts of functions, including control over the internet.

Between the panes blinds are made to function inside a window, or a door. Some innovative manufacturers of glass materials are now leaving open spaces in their windows, and some are selling integrated window treatments between the glass for these windows. These are usually low functioning mini blinds, and they are quit a lot more expensive than simply buying a regular window and standard minis. The convenience factor of cleaning and protection of them have made them worth a look for some who are replacing windows.

Educating yourself about the correct names for the types of blinds in the stores or for sale on the websites will dramatically help you find what you are looking for. Ask for them by name, and ask about options or alternatives. You never know what you will see. The window treatments industry has many innovative products coming our regularly.
